Proposal: Move All GMW Grade-schoolers to Timber Ridge in 2014

The Johnston Community School District will conduct a public information event at 7 p.m., Tues., Dec. 17, at the Johnston Middle School auditorium, seeking public comments on a proposal to redraw elementary school boundaries starting in the 2014-2015 academic year. The middle school is located at 6207 N.W. 62nd Ave., Johnston.

Under a proposed revision to Johnston school boundaries,
all students grades K-5 in the Green Meadows West
neighborhood (dotted white line) would attend
Timber Ridge (purple area). See article for link to full map.
Under the proposed boundaries, all of the Green Meadows West neighborhood would fall into an area served by Timber Ridge Elementary, 7370 N.W. 54th Ave, Johnston. An estimated 107 Wallace students would be transferred to Timber Ridge. Effectively, this represents approximately 22 students at each grade level. A total of 309 students would be affected by the move.

Currently, a majority of the Green Meadows West neighborhood falls into the area served by Henry A. Wallace Elementary, 6510 N.W. 62nd Ave. Only Plat 12—the section of Green Meadows West nearest the neighborhood entrance on N.W. 54th Avenue.—is currently served by Timber Ridge Elementary.

According to press materials, the proposed boundary changes are intended to relieve overcrowding at Beaver Creek and Horizon elementary schools caused by growth in the city's north and west. Starting in 1984, the district cites a 1 to 4 percent annual increase in student population.

"Please keep in mind that no firm decisions have been made," said Johnston Schools Superintendent Clay Guthmiller in an e-mail announcement earlier this week. "We take your feedback seriously and it will guide the committee in their next steps. The Board of Education will review the proposed boundaries at the January 13 meeting, with approval slated for the January 27 meeting."

In addition to the Dec. 17 public meeting, comments regarding the proposed boundary changes may be directed via e-mail to Johnston Schools communications coordinator Laura Dillavou at: laura.dillavou@johnston.k12.ia.us.
